We have had SELF-LOVE.
We have had SELF-CARE.
NOW IT’S TIME FOR SELF-CELEBRATION.
The holiday season is a time of joy and celebration, and a very special time for giving and serving. During this time, we can become stressed as we frantically search for the right gift, decorations, and perfect cuisine in preparation for family gatherings and social events. In the process of celebration, it is essential for us to maintain balance by cultivating life changing qualities that extend beyond the holiday season.
In the process of caring for and honoring others, it is essential for us to take time to wholeheartedly honor ourselves. Life should be filled with joyful moments. On top of that, as living, breathing human beings we all deserve to be acknowledged, appreciated and celebrated. Life gets busy for most of us as we juggle responsibilities and spend much of our time nurturing others. It is important that we each find the time to celebrate who we are, to honor ourselves for our efforts and triumphs, and to praise our resilience even during the hardest of times.
Celebrating ourselves fuels the inspiration we need to stay creatively charged and keep moving forward, constantly taking steps towards reaching our goals.
Although celebrating others and little achievements are always a good way to bring that euphoric fulfillment back into your life, you should also try to celebrate the one person that deserves it the most: you. You, without a doubt, deserve to be celebrated every single day. Life can be hard, and while it's considered normal to push yourself to the max and to put others before yourself, it can be easy to forget that you need some loving, too. The sea of stress and work can really wipe someone out, and during those times, that's when you need to learn to love yourself the most.
You can probably recall some pretty significant ups and downs from the last year or so. There are feelings you might label heavy and or light, experiences that you describe as positive or negative, and memories that are sad or joyful and everything in between and all mixed up sometimes, too.
You have the right to express ALL of these sensations, and furthermore, you can find great strength in this process– by celebrating yourself!
Through all of your challenges and successes, I invite you to Stop. Breathe. Feel. and to give yourself credit. See, it is not just the “big” things that you can honor, it’s every step you take in your journey.
This is what celebrating yourself is all about– slowing down, noticing your experiences, and acknowledging yourself.
Celebrating yourself doesn’t mean you are better than others. Nor should anyone feel this way around you. Those who generally do, need to spend more time cultivating gratitude and self-love. The greatness we see in others should inspire us. Joy is a ripple effect when the mind is clear and the heart is full of gratitude.
Importance of Celebrating You
1. It Reminds Us to Enjoy the Journey
If you are constantly doing and not being, you will miss out on all the beautiful moments in life. Oftentimes, we take life too seriously and we become so attached to the final outcome that we forget to enjoy the journey. It’s great to be ambitious, however the key is to develop a mindset that allows you to pursue big things in life, without sacrificing the small things that make life worth living. Take a moment every day, stop what you are doing, celebrate, and savor the moment. Life is not a race. When you learn to find joy in the journey, the destination feels all the more worthwhile. When was the last time that you stopped to ‘smell the roses’, so to speak?
2. Your Achievements Fuel More Growth
You can only build on success. As you celebrate accomplishments, it creates a deeper hunger to build an even stronger base and pull yourself to greater victory and triumph. You will raise your standards for what is possible and develop the rituals and habits necessary to make sustainable success a part of who you are. Our failures are learning moments, but our successes are the fuel that keeps us going. Always celebrate accomplishments – no matter how small. Track your progress so that you can see how far you’ve come, even if you haven’t yet reached your ultimate goal. It will help you stay positive, which is the key to continued success.
3. Celebrations Give Meaning
There's a reason that traditional cultures have so many rituals and ceremonies, it's because they mark life's passages and give it meaning. We have stripped away many of these celebrations from our bigger, better, faster lives and it's left a big empty hole where meaning used to live. Celebrating ourselves reminds us that our efforts matter; that what we do counts.
4. Celebration Fills Our Need for Approval
There is a reason we get so focused on the result and that's because having a final product is the best way to get a little approval, a pat on the back, a little praise, a "good job" thrown our way. As humans we have a basic need for approval, it's built into our wiring, we want to be recognized for our work. But the truth is that external validation is fleeting and rarely honors us properly anyway. Celebrating ourselves fills this need from the inside, where it really counts.
Simple & Inexpensive Ways to Celebrate You
Some fun and easy ways I celebrate myself, so that you can start to do the same- because you’re worth it.
Watch the sunset/sunrise and ponder your accomplishments
Have a picnic alone or with friends, bring something to toast
Buy a new house plant or gift yourself flowers
Take a nap. (Renew yourself.)
Take a walk by yourself. (Time in nature alone is a great way to escape those nonessential thoughts.)
Recognize that your achievements are YOUR achievements and they will and should mean more to you than to anyone else
Celebrate every night. Before you head off to bed, take a few minutes to celebrate and reflect upon your day. Find gratitude for all the little successes of your day and forgive yourself for any areas in which you fell short. Ending the day with an attitude of celebration and gratitude will add richness to our days and generate more abundance for us to, you guessed it, celebrate!
