Evelisse Colon
Evelisse is currently pursuing their second Master’s in Social Work at Stony Brook University. She has been providing direct support and advocacy in academic and professional settings for nearly a decade. Her experience in mental health began formally through an internship with RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline in 2024, where she provides crisis intervention services and support for survivors. She continues to work with RAINN as a volunteer. She also holds a Masters in the Arts in Higher Education from Stony Brook University.
Evelisse has direct experience supporting survivors of sexual assault and trauma, helping individuals navigate crises and access medical, mental health, and legal resources. Her work demonstrates a strong understanding of how trauma, identity, and systemic inequities intersect in people’s lives.
Her approach is grounded in trauma-informed care and crisis intervention strategies. Evelisse creates non-judgmental, client-centered spaces where individuals feel safe, validated, and empowered to make their own decisions.
One of the most profound insights Evelisse has gained is witnessing the resilience of survivors. She has learned that the role of a mental health professional is not to “fix” but to listen deeply, hold space, and collaborate with individuals as they chart their own paths forward.
What Evelisse values most is being able to witness moments of connection and empowerment. She also appreciates the opportunity to blend advocacy, education, and direct support, bridging individual needs with broader systemic change.
Evelisse views the mind and body as deeply interconnected. She recognizes that trauma often manifests both emotionally and physiologically. In her perspective, effective mental health care requires acknowledging how the body holds experiences and supporting clients in ways that foster both psychological and physical safety.
She is committed to treating each client as a whole individual, honoring their strengths, cultures, identities, histories, and goals. She focuses on centering the client’s voice in determining care. Through trauma-informed practice and systems-level advocacy, she works to provide holistic, individualized support that reflects the unique challenges and resilience of each person she serves.
