My tool of choice for healing and letting go

The weight of negativity can be unbearable. It has the ability to cloud your judgment and make you feel like you're drowning in a sea of despair. This can be a very dangerous place.

Without an outlet for these negative emotions, one of two things can happen: 1) we give way to the negativity and find ourselves in a constant loop of doom and gloom or, 2) we suppress our emotions, numbing ourselves, eventually losing a sense of who we are.

I found myself doing the latter. I was so good at suppressing my emotions that I didn’t even realize I was doing it. I thought I was just being strong, but in reality, I was losing touch with myself. Keeping myself busy, not taking a minute to be with myself, I eventually became a shell of who I once was.

My tool of choice

Meditation has been a powerful tool in my personal journey of healing and letting go of negative feelings. Through therapy, I was introduced to meditation as a means to address my suppressed emotions and experiences. Initially, it was a challenge for me to adopt the practice, but with time, support, and intentional scheduling, I was able to overcome the obstacles.

Learning about Meditation

My journey with meditation began in therapy. My therapist introduced me to the practice of sitting still and focusing on my breath. We started with short sessions of 5 minutes, gradually increasing the duration to 10 and 15 minutes as I became more comfortable. Learning meditation from a trusted professional helped create a safe space for me to explore my emotions.

Adopting the Practice

I decided to adopt the practice of meditation because I realized the importance of addressing all the emotions, life experiences, and trauma that I had been avoiding. Initially, I thought meditation was about silencing the mind, but I soon learned that it was about sitting with the uncomfortable and allowing myself to fully experience and process my feelings.

Challenges and Overcoming Them

One of the biggest challenges I faced was finding the time for meditation. As someone who was always on the run, I needed to make meditation a priority and intentionally schedule it into my day. However, knowing that I had support from my therapist helped me overcome this challenge. I knew I had someone to hold space for my emotions and ensure a safe environment for exploration.

The Transformation through Meditation

After starting meditation, I noticed that my negative feelings started to surface almost immediately. However, it took time to release and let go of them. In the beginning, I resisted these emotions due to fear of what I might unlock within myself. But through the practice of meditation, I learned to face them head-on and work through the process of releasing them.

I have been meditating for 10 years now, and my routine has evolved over time. I now meditate as needed, depending on my schedule and personal circumstances. If I know I have a busy day ahead, I ensure I wake up early enough to start my day with meditation. Taking the time to quiet the external noise and truly listen to myself remains crucial in my practice.

Tips for Those Skeptical of Meditation

For individuals who believe meditation is not for them or struggle to focus enough to meditate, I would like to share the perspective I gained through therapeutic meditation.

It is not about completely silencing the mind; rather, it is about quieting the external noises to connect with your inner self. Through this practice, you can listen and feel the emotions you have been suppressing.

By engaging with your pain in these moments, you can work towards eliminating long-term suffering.

Tips for Overcoming Fear of Being Alone with One's Thoughts

For those who are scared or uncomfortable with being alone with their thoughts during meditation, seeking support from a healer or holistic therapist can be invaluable. They can provide guidance and create a safe space for you to explore your emotions. Having someone to hold space and support you during your meditation practice can help alleviate any fears and discomfort you may have.

Meditation has been a transformative tool for me in letting go of negative feelings and addressing suppressed emotions. With support, intentional scheduling, and the willingness to face the uncomfortable, I have experienced profound healing and growth. If you are hesitant or overwhelmed by the idea of meditation, remember that you are not alone, and there are professionals who can help guide you through the process. Embrace the opportunity to listen to yourself, release negativity, and ultimately find inner peace and well-being.
